The Tai-Ex opened down 43-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,658 on turnover of 4.3-billion N-T.
Shares in Taiwan took a beating, tumbling almost 300 points Tuesday with market sentiment roiled by fears over a possible move by the U.S. Federal Reserve to introduce a rate hike cycle later in the year.
The bellwether electronics sector came under heavy downward pressure, led by contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which lost 1.84 percent.

VP Speaks with US Officials Online

Vice President William Lai spoke with over a dozen US officials during a layover (中途停留) in the country yesterday.
Lai is leading a Taiwanese delegation to Honduras to attend the inauguration of President-elect Xiomara Castro Thursday and Friday.
The VP and his team arrived in Los Angeles at 6:30pm local time, and was greeted at the airport by Taiwan's representative in the US Hsiao Bi-khim, and AIT Chairman James Moriarty.
Due to pandemic-prevention measures, Lai remained at his hotel for the entire 24 hours of his stay, but spoke with 17 US senators and representatives, as well as other officials and overseas compatriot (同胞、國人) groups.
The online meetings were attended by Senator Edward Markey, Representative Mark Takano, Representative Ted Lieu and others.
Lai is set to meet with Honduran President-elect Xiomara Castro today, and will return to Taiwan on Saturday after stopping over in San Francisco.

Polish Targets Hacked with Pegasus

Two more Poles have been identified as victims of phone hacking with the notoriously powerful spyware of Israel's NSO Group.
One is a political leader at odds with (意見不一致、與…不合) Poland's right-wing government and the other a former secret service agent.
The newest discovery by Citizen Lab cybersleuths expands the people targeted by state surveillance under Poland's nationalist government with Pegasus, a tool marketed for use exclusively against criminals and terrorists.
With Pegasus, the hacker gets access to a victim's smartphone data and can surveil them in real time with the phone's microphone and camera.
A Polish senate panel is considering whether the hacking influenced Poland's 2019 election.

Thailand Decriminalizes Marijuana

Thailand has become the first country in Asia to approve the de facto (事實上) decriminalization of marijuana.
Thailand's Narcotics Control Board on Tuesday agreed to have the Health Ministry drop cannabis from its list of controlled drugs.
The delisting proposal by the Thai Food and Drug Administration becomes effective after it is signed by the health minister and published in the government gazette.
It follows the removal of cannabis last month from the list of illegal drugs under Thailand's Narcotics Law.
However, a tangle of related laws means that that cannabis production and possession remains regulated for the time being, leaving the legal status of recreational marijuana use in a grey area.
