Tai-Ex opening
The Tai-Ex opened down nearly 8-points this morning from yesterday's close,
at 16,053 on turnover of 3.2-billion N-T.
The market ended Tuesday's trading day marginally higher following an early
plunge on a technical rebound by the bellwether electronics sector.
Investors remained wary about potential (潛在的) interest rate hikes by the
U-S Federal Reserve, which caused Wall Street to tumble overnight.
However, bargain hunters moved-in to pick up high-tech and old economy stocks
to push the main board back into positive territory.
The U-S State Department says the updated wording on a fact sheet on
Taiwan-US relations reflects the "rock-solid unofficial relationship between
Taiwan and the U-S," but Washington's Taiwan "policy has not changed."
According to spokesman Ned Price, the State Department regularly updates the
status of U-S foreign relations and America's "policy towards Taiwan is still
guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three US-China Joint Communiques,
and the Six Assurances."
The statement comes after the online fact sheet removed (移除) previous
statements saying that Washington acknowledged Beijing's "one China" position
and did not support Taiwanese independence.
Price says the status quo of US-Taiwan relations has not been updated for
many years, and the State Department was concerned about whether foreign
relations are truthfully reflected on the fact list.
The Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute says it has registered a new
pineapple variety with Japan's agricultural ministry.
According to institute, the new cultivar (品種) is named "Tai-Nung No. 23"
and was developed by it's Chiayi Agricultural Experiment Station.
That same station has introduced 18 different pineapple varieties since it
developed the original "Tai-Nung No. 1" in 1934.
The agricultural research institute says it sent a request to Japan's
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in October of last year to
have its variety registered for intellectual property protection in the
Japanese market.
However, further examinations and review will be carried out by Japanese
authorities before the fruit can be given full legal protection there.

A court in El Salvador has sentenced a woman who suffered an obstetric
(產科的) emergency that ended her pregnancy to 30 years in prison for
aggravated homicide.
According to the Citizen Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion, a
nongovernmental organization assisting in her defense, the woman was
sentenced Monday.
The woman had already been in pre-trial detention for two years following her
arrest when she sought medical care in a public hospital.
El Salvador maintains a total ban on abortion and a number of women have been
arrested and sentenced to prison after suffering apparent miscarriages that
were reported to authorities.
