The Tai-Ex opened up 18-points this morning from last Thursday's close, at
16,570 on turnover of 2.5-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex followed other Asian markets into negative territory on the final
day of trading last week before the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, as
investors worried about higher interest rates and rising coronavirus cases in
parts of the region.

Coronavirus Cases

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says the number of new coronavirus cases and
deaths linked to the disease could begin to fall after June 10, as the daily
case load has now been at a relative plateau for the past three weeks.

According to Chen, the just concluded three-day Dragon Boat Festival weekend
is unlikely to cause a spike (高峰.) in cases due to the low number of people
who traveled during the period.

However, Chen says the number of cases in the south will likely reach a peak
in the coming days

Kaohsiung reported the highest number of domestic cases on Sunday, the first
time the city has taken a top spot during the current wave of infections.

Tainan also reported more cases than Taipei.

And in related news,

The Central Epidemic Command Center says the percentage of Taiwan's
population who have gotten at least one dose of a coronavirus accine has now
reached 90-per cent.

According to the latest figures, a total of 82.05-per cent of the population
has received at least two doses.

While 66.47-per cent has gotten a booster shot.

Ukraine's capital Kyiv has been struck with Russian missiles for the first
time in 5 weeks.

Russian president Vladimir Putin warned of additional (追加的、更多的)
attacks if countries like the United States send long range rockets to Kyiv.

Pakistan's military says security forces have killed seven militants in two
different operations near the Afghan border.

The officials say five militants were killed in raid (襲擊) on a hideout in
the Jani Khel area of Bannu district, the gateway to North Waziristan.

Two other militants were killed in a shootout in a tribal district of North
Waziristan.

Both operations happened on Sunday.

Security forces seized arms and ammunition from both areas, and said the
militants had been involved in attacks on security forces in recent months.

Queen Elizabeth II has appeared at the balcony of Buckingham Palace,
delighting fans who had hoped to catch a glimpse of her on the final day of
festivities marking her 70 years on the throne.

The 96-year-old monarch has had problems moving around recently.

Earlier, a street pageant celebrating Elizabeth's life and Britain's
diversity paraded through London.

When it was finished, thousands flooded (湧入) in front of the palace to see
the queen.

` In a statement later, the queen said ``she was humbled and deeply touched''
that so many people celebrated her Platinum Jubilee.
