The Tai-Ex opened down 27-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
16,644 on turnover of $4.4-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex bounced back on Wednesday from a slump in the previous session as
buying was sparked by a rally on Wall Street overnight following a decline in
the U-S benchmark 10-year treasury yield.

Market watchers say bargain hunters rushed to pick up large-cap tech stocks,
in particular in the semiconductor industry, which led the upturn, while
buying also extended (擴張) to select old economy stocks in the tourism and
auto industries to lend additional support to the broader market.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says the Central Epidemic Command Center
expects the daily number of new coronavirus cases to decline next week.

Most of the new cases have been reported in Taichung - at 11,587.

According to the health minister, the increase is because Taichung's
infection rate has yet to reach 10-per cent and daily caseloads will continue
to rise until it reaches that level.

However, he he says the national daily caseload is likely to fall next week,
but will take a little longer before it drops below 1,000.

Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai says he hopes to establish a round-island
high speed rail service.

Preliminary work on extensions between Zuoying Station in Kaohsiung and
Liu-Kuai-Cuo Station in Pingtung County, and between Nangang Station in
Taipei and a proposed (建議的) new station in Yilan County are already
underway.

The transport ministry has said that construction is expected to take 10
years to complete and it could begin as early as 2025.

Former US President Trump is set to undergo (經歷) questioning in July in a
New York civil probe.

AP correspondent Mike Gracia reports.

Brazilian authorities have begun using helicopters to search for a British
journalist and Indigenous official missing for three days in a remote
(偏僻的) area of the Amazon rainforest.

Amazonas state civil police said Wednesdy they have identified a suspect.

But the state's public security secretary said later that officials don't
have any concrete evidence to tie the man to the disappearances.

Authorities earlier said they have questioned five other people in the case
but no arrests have been made since the disappearance of journalist Dom
Phillips and Bruno Araujo Pereira, who is an employee of Brazil's Indigenous
affairs agency.

The two were threatened Saturday by a group of men brandishing firearms.

Algeria has announced it is ``immediately'' suspending a two-decades-old
friendship treaty with Spain.

It was the latest blow to increasingly wobbly relations between the
governments in Algiers and Madrid.

Spain depends on Algeria for its natural gas supply.

Tensions have soared in a complex three-way dispute after Spain apparently
backed Morocco's position over the disputed (有爭議的) Western Sahara
territory.

Algeria backs the Polisario independence movement which has rejected
Morocco's annexation of Western Sahara.

The statement by Algeria's presidential office criticized what it said was
the ``unjustifiable turnaround (迴轉)'' in March on Spain's position on
Western Sahara.
