Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 21-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,117 on turnover of $6.7-billion N-T.
The Tai-Ex bucked the regional trend and lost ground on Thursday, despite an advance on Wall Street overnight led by tech companies and banks, but turnover still managed to reach a historic high of 644-billion N-T.
Market watchers say Thursday's trading was influenced by volatile (不穩定的；易變的) trading, as the Tai-Ex spent much of the morning in positive territory before plunging after investors opted to dump shares in the shipping sector in afternoon trading.
Yang Ming Marine lost nearly 5-per cent during the session, while Evergreen Marine's share price fell by 4-per cent as investors shied away from shipping sector.
Cabinet Passes Draft Amendment to Close Housing Tax Loophole

The Cabinet has approved a draft amendment to the House Tax Act, as part of govenment efforts to clamp down on the practice of registering multiple addresses at the same home in order to claim tax exemption for low-cost housing.
Under Taiwan's current laws, properties valued at under 100,000 N-T are exempted (免除，豁免（責任、付款等）) from the house tax, regardless of whether the owner is a person or a legal entity.
However, propery owners have been claiming exemption by registering multiple addresses at individual properties, thus legally dividing them into multiple units valued at under the 100,000 N-T threshold.
The Taxation Administration says the draft amendment seeks to close that loophole by making the exemption available only to natural persons and to limit it to those with three or fewer properties under their name.
The new law is expected to affect almost 11-thousand legal persons, and increase tax revenues by 32-million N-T.

Canada Bans India Pakistan Flights

Canada is banning all flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days due to the growing wave of COVID-19 cases in that region.
India reported a global record of more than 314,000 new infections Thursday.
Canada's health minister says half the people who are testing positive for the coronavirus after arriving in Canada by airplane have come from India.
She adds that there is also a disproportionate (不成比例的；不相稱的；太大（或太小）的) higher number of positive cases among those travelling on flights from Pakistan.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, meanwhile, is apologizing for a failed attempt to close playgrounds and allow police to stop and question people who were not in their homes.
The measures created a backlash from police forces, health officials and the public.
German Group Promises Support for Protesting Olympic Athletes

Athletes who make political or social justice protests at the Tokyo Olympics have been promised legal support by a global union and an activist group in Germany.
The pledges by the World Players Association and Athleten Deutschland came one day after the International Olympic Committee confirmed its long-standing ban on ``demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda.''
Rule 50 applies to the field of play, medal podiums (領獎台) and opening and closing ceremonies.
Raising a fist or kneeling for a national anthem could lead to punishment from the IOC.
