The Tai-Ex opened up 79-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,646 on turnover of 9-billion N-T.
The Tai-Ex lost ground on Wednesday following muted trading on Wall Street overnight.
The bellwether electronics sector moved lower during the session, led by major semiconductor stocks, but rotational buying bolstered (支撐；加固；提高；改善) select old economy heavyweights, preventing the broader market from falling further.
And market watchers says sentiment also remained cautious ahead of the outcome of a two-day policy making meeting of the U-S Federal Reserve.
Economics Minister Plays Down Chip production in EU

Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua is seeking to play down reports that Taiwan's leading semiconductor manufacturers could build new plants in Europe.
According to Wang, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing has repeatedly stressed that its most advanced technology will continue to be produced mainly in Taiwan and it is not seeking to ship it overseas.
The statement comes after it was reported that the European Union is planning to offer subsidies (補助金；津貼，補貼) to chipmakers, including T-S-M-C, to build new plants there amid concerns about chip supply chains.
Rain Boosts Water Supplies

The Water Resources Agency says the current wet weather is helping to increase water levels in reservoirs islandwide.
According to the latest estimates, some 2.82-million cubic meters of rainwater was collected in reservoirs from midnight through 4PM on Wedneday.
And officials say that amount is equal to two day's-worth of water for Taichung.
Agency Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng says the timely rain fell "in the right places" for reservoirs' catchment areas, and is expected to partly replenish (補充；把…再備足；重新裝滿) them.
However, he's still warning that there is a long way to go before the long-term drought problem can be resolved.
Myanmar Airstrikes Against Guerrillas

Reports say Myanmar government forces have launched airstrikes against ethnic minority guerrillas in two areas of the country.
Fighting has been raging daily in northern Myanmar in territory controlled by the Kachin Independence Organization, representing the Kachin minority, and in the east by the Karen National Union, representing the Karen.
Both groups have struck alliances with the popular movement opposing the military junta that seized (奪取；抓獲) power in the country in February after ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
Both the Karen Peace Support Network and the Free Burma Rangers confirmed a total of six air attacks involving jets and helicopters.
They said there were no known casualties but the Peace Support Network said about 300 villagers fled across the border.

Ecuador Decriminalizes Abortion for Rape

Ecuador's Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of decriminalizing abortion in cases of rape.
The change paves the way for laws imposing prison sentences in such cases to be changed.
The decision came in response to a petition (請願書，申訴書，訴狀) from seven women's, feminist and human rights groups.
Despite an order not to hold public gathers, anti- and pro-abortion groups held demonstrations outside the Constitutional Court.
