The Tai-Ex opened down 21-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,893, on turnover of $4.1-billion N-T.
The Tai-Ex continued to gain ground on Thursday, as investors waited for U-S inflationary data that could influence (影響) the Federal Reserve's decision on when to roll back economic stimulus.
Market watchers say although ending the day in positive territory, the local main board is still facing stiff technical resistance as it closes in on the 18,000-point mark.
EY: China Influence in Nicaragua Severing of Ties

The Executive Yuan says China was likely involved in Nicaragua's decision to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Executive Yuan spokesperson Luo Bing-cheng spoke in radio interviews this morning, saying that the government has been monitoring the situation closely.
Luo says the possibility of China's influence in the break can not be ruled out (排除), and says China's efforts to limit Taiwan's diplomatic outreach is common knowledge.
The spokesperson says the government is also moving to reciprocate Nicaragua's move in kind, in order to protect Taiwan's dignity.
This comes as several US Senators have taken to social media to criticize both Nicaragua and China.
Republican Senator Rick Scott called the change "a shameful move", and several others also said the US must stand firm in support of Taiwan.

Government Pledges to US$1 Million to Support Independent Journalism

The government is promising a significant donation to support independent news outlets.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the government has pledged a total of 1-million U-S dollars.
MOFA says the donations will be given to the International Fund for Public Interest Media over a three year period beginning next year.
Ministry officials say the donation is in response to the U-S.' call for countries to jointly help combat (反對（不良現象等）；防止) the spread of disinformation and to increase the resilience of democratic systems.
Mexico Migrant Smuggling Truck Crash

Mexican authorities say at least 49 people were killed and dozens more injured when a cargo truck carrying people who appeared to be Central American migrants rolled over and crashed in southern Mexico.
The head of the Chiapas state civil defense office says the preliminary (初步的) estimate lists 49 dead and 58 injured.
He says about 21 of the injured have serious wounds.
The crash occurred Thursday on a highway leading toward the Chiapas state capital.
The victims appeared to be immigrants from Central America, though their nationalities had not yet been confirmed.
Officials say some of the survivors said they were from the neighboring country of Guatemala.

Brazil to Require Quarantine for Unvaccinated International Travelers

Brazil will require international travelers who aren't vaccinated against the coronavirus to quarantine for five days in their city of destination after arriving by plane.
The government decision was published in the nation's official gazette on Thursday.
The administration of President Jair Bolsonaro will start enforcing (強制執行) the measure on Dec. 11.
Travelers coming to Brazil still need to submit a negative PCR test result before boarding in their country of origin and submit a declaration to the country's health regulator.
