發佈於 2022-01-14 10:38:14

The Tai-Ex opened up 72-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 18,509 on turnover of $8.2-billion N-T.

The market gained ground for the fourth consecutive session on Thursday, as the financial sector was boosted by hopes the U-S Federal Reserve will kick-off a rate-hike cycle (週期、循環) later this year to push up financial institutions' returns from their overseas investments.

Large-cap financial stocks led the upturn throughout the session, as the sector rose 2.3-per cent to stabilize the broader market.

While Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing fell from the previous session during most of the day before late-session buying helped the stock return to positive territory.

In a statement carried by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency, an unidentified Foreign Ministry spokesperson defended the North's recent launches of purported hypersonic missiles as a righteous exercise of self-defense.

The Biden administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on five North Koreans over their roles in obtaining equipment and technology for the North's missile programs in its response to the North's latest missile test this week and also said it would seek new U.N. sanctions.

 Nobel Committee Admonishes Ethiopian PM

發佈於 2022-01-14 10:38:15

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the prestigious Peace Prize, has issued a very rare admonition (勸誡、責備) to the 2019 winner, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, over the war and humanitarian crisis in his country's Tigray region.

In a statement, the committee said: ``As prime minister and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Abiy Ahmed has a special responsibility to end the conflict and contribute to peace.''

Abiy partly won the prize for making peace with neighboring Eritrea.

But in November 2020, Abiy's government allowed Eritrean forces into Tigray as they together pursued the Tigray leaders after political tensions erupted into war.

Some tens of thousands of people have been killed, and hundreds of thousands now face famine as Ethiopia's government has kept almost all food and medical aid from Tigray since late June.
